SUPPORT OUR APPEAL TO HELP PREVENT CANCER

In 1987, the UK government acted on a report from a Scottish doctor and researcher, Sir Patrick (“Pat”) Forrest to introduce breast cancer screening across the country. Since then, breast screening has saved countless numbers of lives by detecting cancer early. It was a major advance but Sir Pat always recognised that prevention is better than cure. As the centenary of Sir Pat’s birth approaches in 2023, we are launching a fundraising campaign to support research into the prevention of cancer.

What do we aim to achieve?

With the money raised through this campaign we will train young doctors to carry out research into cancer prevention by funding research fellowships in the memory of Sir Pat Forrest. These will be located in Scottish centres of excellence and will allow the successful applicants to take time out from routine work to concentrate on their research. By training the up-and-coming generation we will be investing in the future, and by doing this in Scotland we will provide direct benefit to the Scottish people.

The Scottish Cancer Foundation is a registered charity (SC028300) and receives no central funding.  It is therefore entirely dependent upon voluntary contributions. All contributions go directly to the work of the Foundation, which focuses on the people of Scotland.  It should be stressed that the Scottish Cancer Foundation is the only cancer charity that is specifically dedicated to relieving the burden of cancer in Scotland by focusing on prevention.
